I’m wasting time in Cairns Australia and what else to do there than scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef? I guess as long as I’m in the largest coral reef in the world I may as well explore a small part of it in detail. The day I got here I purchased a four day diving cruise which includes 12 dives (2 of which will be night dives) , with all meals included. The dive company was named Down Under Dive.
We left for the reef three days later. The dive boat was big and comfy and I even got my own private room, which was great for drying off after each scuba dive. The reality is that it was pretty full on. The order of the day was – wake up at 6:30 and dive , have breakfast , scuba , have lunch , dive , have cake , dive , have a huge dinner , more diving , sleep. Life was reduced to that of a gold fish , just swimming and eating which was perfect for me. I am now a beleiver that sea sickness tablets are more important than birth control tablets in the great order of things. Women have been having children since the dawn of time but only lately have people been afloat on a floating , motor driven machine in the great seas of the world. In other words , thank GOD I aquired seasick pills because the sea was ultra rough and they were my magic wand.
The scuba dives were great and the things I saw were pretty amazing. I witnessed everything from giant trevally to lionfish and heaps of pretty coral and amazing fish just swimming all around you. Since the popular animation ‘Finding Nemo’ the fish in the reef have been christened new names. When you return from a dive you saw Nemo instead of a Clownfish. Being underwater though is a life changing experience , it’s whole other world down there and being neutrally buoyant is an incredible experience. Now I can definately state that I feel at home in the sea , equalizing my ears is simple so I think that I am able to continue scuba diving in other destinations.
The instructors were totally fun and entertaining as a bonus. We had briefings before each scuba dive and after the dive we all filled in our log books with the details of the dives. Luckily , the catering was the best I’ve seen so far on this whole trip. some of the food was sun dried tomatoes and Indian food , and good bread and tropical fruit. It was definitely worth the money , that’s a fact. I assure you that if you don’t try scuba diving when you holiday in Cairns it’s like going to China and not walking some of the Great Wall It’s a must doin other words.
