There isn’t anything like high sierra backpack trips. My favorite place for a high sierra backpack trip is Yosemite National Park in California. Yosemite is home to some of the most famous mountain and rock formations in the world, including El Capitan, Half Dome, Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, and, of course, Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls. While there is superb backpacking out of the Yosemite Valley, the most excellent location for a high sierra backpack outting is the back country of Yosemite. The wilderness of Yosemite is at a higher elevation and does not have the creature comforts of Yosemite valley. As a result, far fewer tourists utilize this part of the park.
The majority of high sierra back pack trips in Yosemite start from a location of the park named Tuolumne Meadows. Blanketed by snow the majority of of the year, Tuolumne Meadows features views of the most magnificent mountains in the Sierra Nevadas. If one is fortunate, you can obtain a drawing than permits you admission to back country “huts” – essentially permanent tents errected and rented out by Yosemite Park. In this case, you start your high sierra backpack trip from Tuolumne Meadows and hike to several of these huts over a multi-day period.

Generally, you will want to schlepp enough clothes, snacks, and emergency items to get you through a few days, so a large backpack is required. High Sierra backpacks are made in different shapes and sizes, but don’t obtain the first high sierra backpack you notice. Take time to learn which of the high sierra backpacks feels best on your back. Large backpacks aren’t all the same, so taking some time to try them on is sensible.
While hydration backpacks are very popular, they aren’t the best large rucksack for hiking in the high sierras. While water is important, it is best to purchase a large backpack for your high sierra backpack excursion. Water bottles can be toted in a large rucksack’s bottle pockets or they can be fastened to the large rucksack. High Sierra rucksacks provide these options with all of their large backpacks. The other thing to consider for your high sierra rucksack adventure is camera supplies. Regardless of whether you are a photograph taking pro or a novice, you will want to shoot your own photographs on your high sierra rucksack event.
